Tasted from barrel, the 2012 Cote Rotie les Grande Places is solid, with classic cassis, licorice, crushed rock and violet aromas and flavors, full-bodied richness and a killer texture. There's some sweet oak here, but it has terrific purity of fruit and a great mid-palate.

I had a fantastic visit with winemaker Stephan Montez, and this top-notch estate fashions a bevy of brilliant Condrieu and Côte Rôtie. During the visit, I was able to do a vertical of each of his Côte Rôties (the les Grandes Places back to '97) but didn't have time to get those reviews into this report. I'll publish those reviews as a stand alone article at a later date.
